Can diseased garden vegetables be used as worm food?

Tani sent us the following message about worm food:

Rust is the main problem this time of year, & I stay on top of it by removing leaves as soon as they"re even slightly spotty (e.g. from beetroot or spinach) - I understand you're not meant to compost them, but is it ok to feed to worms?

I've done so & they like it, Am I perpetuating a problem or providing a good worm food??

Answer:

Hello Tani,

worms are amazing omnivores. I don't see any problems feeding your worms beetroot and spinach leaves. Your worms are giving you the answer you are looking for. If they are feeding on it gladly and don't stay away from it or attempt to leave your worm bin, than they enjoy the food you are offering to them.

For more information have a look at our page called "worm food rating list" which gives you more stats about the subject!

So keep on going and happy worming.

Kind regards

Stephan
