Spring 2026 Is Here – Is Your Worm Bin Ready? 3 Reasons to Get Started this week Issue #106 April 18, 2026 |
Spring Revival / Getting StartedHello and a huge warm welcome to all our new subscribers — and a big “welcome back” to our long-time friends! It’s been a while since our last Global Worming News, but we’re back and fully committed to helping you succeed with your worm composting projects in 2026. Whether you’re in the USA, Europe, or anywhere across the Northern Hemisphere, April is prime time for a Spring Revival. Let’s wake up those worms and turn your kitchen scraps into rich black gold this season! To those of you in the Southern Hemisphere, although you are going into a different season now a lot of the information might be helpful for you too.6 Practical Steps for your Bins in SpringAs soil temperatures rise above 50°F (10°C) across most of the USA and Europe, your red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are waking up and ready to work harder. Here’s a proven 6-step revival plan: 1. Check & Adjust Temperature — Ideal range is 55–77°F (13–25°C). Move bins indoors, into a garage, or against a sunny wall if nights are still cool.
2. Refresh the Bedding — Remove any old, soggy material from winter. Add 3–4 inches of fresh moist bedding: shredded newspaper, cardboard, or coco coir. It should feel like a wrung-out sponge. 3. Gentle Feeding Restart — Start small! Begin with chopped fruit/veg scraps, coffee grounds, and crushed eggshells. Feed only what they can eat in 2–3 days to avoid smells or pests. 4. Improve Aeration & Moisture — Spring rains can make bins too wet. Fluff the bedding weekly with a garden fork and add dry shredded paper if it feels overly damp. 5. Add a Little Garden Soil — A thin sprinkle of soil introduces beneficial microbes that help break down food faster. 6. Monitor for Activity — Healthy worms will cluster near fresh food within days. If they’re slow, warm the bin slightly and reduce feeding Getting Started for Complete Beginners in 2026New to worm composting? It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding hobbies (or side businesses) you can start this spring.Basic Starter Setup (under $50–$80): A 10–20 gallon plastic bin with drainage holes and a lid. about 500 to 1,000 red wigglers — order from a reputable supplier, or find them for free (Follow the link below, to find out how) Bedding: 4–6 inches of moist shredded cardboard/newspaper + a handful of garden soil. Place the bin in a shaded, temperate spot (not in direct sun). Your worms will process ½ lb of kitchen scraps per day once established. In 2–3 months you’ll start harvesting nutrient-rich worm castings — the best natural fertilizer for gardens, houseplants, and vegetable beds. Many readers report healthier tomatoes and roses within the first season!

1. Too Wet / Smelly Bin → Add dry bedding and leave the lid cracked for a day. Bury food deeper. 2. Fruit Flies → Freeze scraps before feeding or cover with a thick layer of dry paper. (Build a Homemade fruit-fly trap. See Link below
3. Slow Worms → They’re probably still a bit cold — warm the bin and feed less until they’re active. 4. Worms Escaping → Usually a sign of poor conditions (too wet, too hot, or to acidic). Fix the environment and they’ll stay happily inside. I do have quite a few articles about this problem on www.worm-compostic-help.com for more information. Making money with your worm bin
