black fly larva in my bin

by Earl compton
(Streetman Tx)

I'm trying to raise euros for fishing. I don't care about compost,i don't feed my worms anything but Purina worm chow.(NO KIND OF SCRAPS) My bin now has black fly larva. i understand they are bad for my worms. I thoughl pic
them out regularly can't seem to get them all. Is there a way yo get rid of this pest without harming my worms? I've heard lime would work but i don't want take a chance on harming my worms.

Black fly larvae in my worm bin
by: Earl compton

The larvae entered my worm bin with a vengeance, I hate those nasty things!! Every couple of days I would pick out all I could find.

When I was at my wit's end for about a month, I went to my bin and the larvae were GONE !! Don’t know where they went, don’t care as long as they don’t come back. I’m going to add some Dolomite n keep my fingers crossed. Been 2 weeks now and no larvae.. I’m a happy camper!!!

Hello Earl,

that sounds like "Black soldier fly maggots."

Have a look at the two articles about the BSF maggots.

You might have to start your worm farm from scratch again if you can't get rid of the vast majority of the BSF maggots. If the maggots are left undisturbed the worm bedding will most likely become soggy and smelly and the worms will either have fled towards the lower parts of your bin or even left the bin for good.

The URL's for the BSF articles are as follows:

and

https://www.worm-composting-help.com/how-to-stop-these-maggots-from-killing-all-the-worms-in-your-worm-farm.html

I hope you come right.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Kind regards
