Hi there.
Can I use earthworms for composting human waste in 5 gallon plastic buckets, and if so how?
Thanks in advance.

Sincerely.

Clinton Earl.

Hello Clinton,

principaly it is possible to compost human manure in smaller containers like a 5 gallon or a 25 liter bucket but in the long run you might need a lot of those buckets to achieve your goals as the compost worms will need quite some time to process all the human manure and for several reasons it is best to let the composted manure mature for at least 15 month although 24 month would even be better. So it might be quite a good idea to include thermophilic composting into your process to make sure all the pathogens that might have been in the human manure have been eliminated.

We have several articles about composting human manure on our website and I suggest you have a look at some of them.

Here is a link to one of those articles:

There are quite a few worms to successfully receicle human manure with composts worms and I wish you all the best for your worm composting project.

I trust this will help you.

Kind regards
